Skincare for me is a constant work in progress, I'm still learning about different products and trying to understand what my skin type is and what it is my skin needs. I've always believed that my skin type was normal with occasional dry patches - I've always had pretty good and clear skin so Ive never had any reason to believe that my skin might possibly be a different skin type.

The way i explain this might be a little long winded and not make much sense but when i attended the Fabb Liverpool Event back in March i spoke to the lady at the ESPA table, they were giving out little skincare sets that matched our own skin type. She did a little test in which i smelled two cleansers/toners and she asked me which i was most drawn to. The one i picked apparently meant that my skin type was Oily/Combination and that it was craving what was in the product i was drawn to, to me this sounded absolutely ridiculous as I've never had oily skin so how could smelling a product make that assumption. We actually did the little test a second time as it was clear i didn't really believe her but i got the same results so i left with the ESPA Essentials Collection for Oily/Combination Skin*

I'll be honest and say it's taken me a while to get around to using this as I'm still not so convinced by their method of testing it and i was worried that using it may wreak havoc with my skin but I've been using it for the past few weeks so i thought I'd share my thoughts on the four products in the kit and my overall opinion on the Essentials Collections.

Balancing Foam Cleanser
A foaming facial wash to clear, cleanse and soften. Gentle Coconut and naturally foaming Yucca deeply cleanse, Organic Mandarin perfectly balances skin's natural oils, whilst Olive Oil and Sugarbeet lightly nourish to leave skin clear, soft and supple.

This is a really gentle cleanser that removes both make up and cleans away impurities - I'm actually enjoying using this foam cleanser a lot more than i thought i would, as it's 'foaming' it lathers up really nicely on the skin. I remove my make up prior to using this so how well it removes make up isn't something i can comment on but it's a really nice cleanser, my skin always feels really soft and cleansed after using it. It also has a really pleasant light scent to it.

Balancing Herbal SpaFresh
A toner to hydrate, revive and clarify. It refreshes and tones your skin with the pure, gently astringent and naturally clarifying tonic, enriched with pure essential oils. Helps to guard against congestion, outbreaks and blemishes for clear, revitalised skin.

This is quite possibly my favourite product out of the collection; i don't often use toners in my skincare routine as i sometimes find them quite harsh against the skin but this is really gentle. The scent isn't my favourite but i honestly don't care because i love how it leaves my skin feel - i feel like it removes anythings that i may have missed whilst cleansing and it's so clarifying. I don't what it is about this product but i really like using it.

Balancing Face Treatmeant Oil
A Purifying facial treatment to help balance oil and nourish. Clarifying lemon and Rose Geranium help purify and balance oil, while Rose Damascena soothers unruly problematic skin. Sweet Almond and Avocado hydrate and nourish for a soft, supple finish. Restoring skin's equilibrium with this light, destressing facial treatment formulated to be easily absorbed without blocking pores.

This is my least favourite product in the collection; I'm generally a bit iffy with face oils, i don't what it is but i just don't like using them so much. You put a small amount of the oil into the palm of your hands and lightly press it into your skin, it does leave your skin feeling soft but the scent of this isn't very nice and i find it kind of off-putting - i have still been using it and i do like how soft and hydrating using an oil is but the scent really isn't pleasant.

Balancing 24-Hour Balancing Moisturiser
A light, oil balancing complex for beautifully soft, clear, hydrated skin. With purifying White Thyme balances oil, calming Lavender and Chamomile soothe, while Vitamin C-rich Lemon and Irish Moss Protect and moisturise without clogging pores for soft, clear skin.

This is a really nice moisturiser; it feels really hydrating and calming on the skin. My skin always feels really lovely and soft after using this, i like that's it has quite a thin consistency so you don't have to wait ages to settle in. I also find that the scent is quite relaxing; it smells mostly of lavender which isn't a scent I'm usually to crazy about but i actually find it really relaxing with this moisturiser.

You also get a little headband in the kit which is really handy! I'm still not 100% convinced that my skin type is Oily/Combination, i just find it hard to believe that smelling a product can determine such a thing or maybe I'm just stubborn and don't want to admit that i was wrong. However, i have found myself enjoying using the ESPA Essentials Collections* - my skin feels really good and its so soft too. I'm still having problems with blemishes on my chin but I've noticed that it's cleared up a lot since I've been using this and been a lot more consistent with this kit, now i have been using other products to tackle my chin so i don't know whether the improvement is down to those but on a whole it has definitely improved.

What do you think? Have you tried ESPA?

  1. I still haven't tried anything from ESPA but this has definitely got me intrigued, how on earth can smelling something tell you your skin type?! I will be keeping an eye out (or my nose, maybe that's more appropriate?) for more of their products... x
