1950s Inspired FOTD Feat. Max Factor Marilyn Lipstick in Ruby Red

This post is the result of me being rather bored on Bank Holiday Monday and deciding to play dress up and do my make up. I've always loved the 1950's make up style with a classic ruby red lip and that's excatly what i ended up trying to do. I also realised it would have been Marilyn Monroe's 90th Birthday yesterday so it's almost like a little tribute to her too.

I am by no means a professional make up artist, nor do i claim to be as good as one. As i mentioned at the start this was literally a result of boredom.

I wanted to try and achieve a natural yet flawless looking base. Thankfully, the lighting has hidden a few sins because my skin isn't in perfect condition at the moment but to attempt to achieve my flawless base, i primed the skin with the L'Oreal Infalliable Mattifying Base Primer and then used Maybelline Dream Velvet Soft Matte Hydrating Foundation in Natural as my base, i really like this foundation, it's so easy to use and gives the skin a really lovely finish - i always use a primer underneath though because it can cling to dry patches a little bit.

My under eyes and blemishes i covered with the Maycheer Cover Face Concealer and i lightly powdered my face with the Ben Nye Banana Powder, this sets everything nicely whilst brightening up the skin too. I very lightly contoured with Benefit's Hoola Bronzer; i didn't want a full on contour, i just wanted to add a little definition and shape to my face. I used Benefit's Dandelion Blush to add a subtle colour to the cheeks. I then finished off the base by highlighting with The Balm's Mary Lou Manizer - i applied this to the tops of my cheeks bones, middle of my forehead and underneath my brows.

I didn't do anything different to what i normally would - i shaped and filled in my brows with the Maybelline Brow Satin Pencil in Dark Brown and then set those in place with the H&M Eyebrow Fix - i really love using this combination for my eyebrows because it's so easy and leaves my brows looking great.

I kept the eyes quite basic but i really like how they turned out, it's so natural but so pretty. For the base, i used my trusty Mac Paint Pot in Painterly, I'm so close to running out of this which makes me really sad. I then took my Urban Decay Naked Basics Palette and ran Naked 2 through the crease, i didn't want this to be too noticeable, i just wanted something that would add definition to the eye and this is the perfect colour for this. I then took Mac Eyeshadow in Naked Lunch all over the lid and lined along the lash line with Mac Eyeshadow in Mystery, i winged it out a little but it's very subtle.

I went all out for this look and applied some lashes, these are just some really cheap ones off BornPrettyStore* and i trimmed them to fit my eye better and applied those with Duo Eyelash Glue. I then went back to my Urban Decay Naked Basics Palette and using the shade Crave, i ran that along the lash line - this helps blend the eyelashes with my lash line and also just adds a little something else to the eye look. I applied Max Factor Masterpiece HD Mascara* to blend the lashes together with my own and balance out the bottom lashes with Clinique Bottam Lash Mascara.

I knew from the very beginning i wanted a true classic red lip, so before i even started any of my make up - i used the Kiss Apricot Lip Scrub to remove any dry bits and smooth out my lips. I then shaped and lined my lips with the MUA Intense Colour Lip Liner in Red Drama, i kept my lips to their natural shape for the most part, i just emphasised them a little bit at the cupids bow. For lipstick i used the Max Factor Marilyn Lipstick in Ruby Red* i don't wear this colour often because whenever i wear a red, i tend to go for a much darker shade but this is the perfect ruby red shade.

I did add a little 'Monroe' dot, above my lip using the pencil side of the Maybelline Brow Drama and i think it looks quite cute. Over all, i quite like this make up look - i especially love how the eyes turned out. Not a bad turn out considering this was the result of boredom, just a shame i had no plans to go anyway.

What do you think?

  1. Such a great look on you! The red lipstick really brings out the colour of your eyes. I love the classic 50s look and often adapt it for daytime with a glowier base and a red tinted lip balm.
